hockey mommyhood

It requires much dedication to make the decision to enrol your child in a sport so serious as "le hockey". It is a great commitment on parts of the player and the parent! I got home awhile ago from the early morning rush off to PowerSk8 and was ready for a nap. It is not even lunch time! We have to be back at the arena in 4 more hours. There are actually parents at our rink with 4 kids in hockey... yikes!! Bless them. I have only my oldest on the ice so far, and still it seems I spend half of my week going back and forth to hockey. But you know what.... I would not have it any other way.
I am a Hockey Mom! I love it. I enjoy sitting with my Tim's coffee and watching my son learn and grow in life (as it relates to hockey). The skills, sportsmanship, cooperation, rules... it all applies to life. He falls down, gets knocked around, helps out a team mate, takes instruction, gets a pat on the back, gets yelled at, wins some, loses some and gets better with time and practice.... yep, it is definitely applicable. I am able to feel such pride as I watch MY boy out there.
Being at the good old hockey game is like second nature to me, growing up a rinkrat myself tagging along to my brothers games and practices for years. The cold nose, numb butt, stale smell of equipment, zamboni rumble, echoing buzzer... it is really comforting.
The very best of all is when Josh makes eye contact with me when he skates across the ice. He knows I am there just for him, he knows what I am thinking. These will be some of my best memories of his childhood. He may not grow up to play in the NHL but that kid out there is an absolute star to his Mom!
